Finding Gluten in your Foods

Posted on June 24, 2011

Gluten is in many types of foods. Breads, crisps, cakes, breakfast cereals and beer are the most obvious. However it is often used in popcorn coatings, communion wafers, gravy, soy sauce, vending machine coffee and some egg products. Make sure you read all labels. Hidden gluten can be found in some of the following…

  • Sausage (as filler)
  • Luncheon meats (as filler)
  • Blue Cheese (mold starter may contain gluten)
  • Gravy powders and stock cubes such as OXO cubes
  • Meat & fish pastes
  • Self-basting Turkeys
  • Dry mustard powder
  • Instant coffee
  • Brown Rice Syrup
  • The less expensive brands of chocolate
  • Some chips (especially seasoned ones)
  • Soy sauce, although Tamari is fine
  • Drinking Chocolate
  • Licorice
  • Chutneys and pickles
  • Salad dressings
  • Spice blends
  • Malt Vinegar

Gluten can also impact your system when you don’t ingest it. If you’re certain you’ve not ingested any, consider if you’ve touched it. Look out for it in these products;

  • Play Dough
  • Some Tooth Pastes
  • Some Cosmetics
  • Some Supplements
  • Some Medicines
