Gluten Free Road Trips

Posted on July 26, 2016

We all know how to hit the road happy. We pack and plan, as gluten free people do. I absolutely love stocking my Sweet Ali’s freezer bag with 4-packs of cinnamon rolls and cupcakes, bags of cheesy rolls, and loaves of banana chocolate chip bread … not to mention back-up protein like sliced turkey and hard boiled eggs. I am ready to go, ready to be flexible.

But sometimes, a gluten free girl just wants to dine out, even while traveling on the road. I research before and use apps during, and I usually find a few options. But sometimes, a restaurant turns out to be less accommodating or not knowledgeable or careful enough. In my eyes, vacation is way too valuable to take that risk of being sick on the road. And then I hit the back-up protein …

Then there are times when I come across gluten free restaurant gold! A rare and beautiful road trip find that makes a gluten free girl’s vacation that much better. I happen upon them with apps, word of mouth, or websites. They made me happy, satisfied, and well, on vacation.

Here are my favorite out of the blue, gluten free road trip surprises. All of them were delicious for everyone and gluten free for me! And if your road trip takes you anywhere near these locations, please consider a detour to pay them a visit. You’ll be happy you did.

Midwest

Noble Restaurant

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Oh. My. Goodness. Please, please take a peek at this menu. The restaurant is about 75% gluten free, and it’s near impossible to decide what to choose.

Graham’s Chocolate

Geneva and Wheaton, Illinois

Gluten free ice cream cones! And they easily tell you which gelato was made first and second, so you can avoid cross-contamination. It’s local, but it’s a great place to visit for a stay-cation or with out of town guests.

Southeast

King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles

Asheville, North Carolina

Truly, truly safe, and truly, truly delicious.

Posana Restaurant

Asheville, North Carolina

Farm to table, beautiful food, and all of it’s gluten free.

Windy Corner Market and Restaurant

Lexington, Kentucky

Beautiful option in the heart of horse country. You can’t eat everything, but they are very aware and careful and have GF buns. Delicious burgers with homemade bacon jam.

Mid-Atlantic

Smyrna Diner

Smyrna, Delaware

This unassuming restaurant is near Dover and the beaches. It’s true diner food, but they absolutely know what they’re doing when it comes to gluten free.

Here’s to safe travel this summer. May your gluten free road trips be tasty!

If you’re ever in Nashville, check out A Matter of Taste Eatery (full service restaurant) and Vegan Vee’s (bakery) – both are 100% gluten free and AMAZING!!!

I’m originally from Glenview and am hoping to have family can pick up some treats for me to try from y’all when I’m in town next Monday!
